Rioja Alavesa is characterized by a cooler climate with Atlantic influence, limestone soils, and vineyards located at high altitudes (400–700 meters), which allows for slow grape ripening. The soils in Alavesa are mainly limestone and clay-limestone, contributing to wines with high minerality, elegance, and structure. The average annual precipitation ranges between 300 and 600 mm.

In Rioja Alavesa, the average winter temperature ranges from 5 to 8 °C, while in summer it reaches between 25 and 30 °C. These conditions, along with cool nights, ensure a slow and uniform grape ripening, preserving the freshness and acidity of the wines. This balanced ripening favors the development of intense flavors and aromas in the grapes.

History of the winery

Bodegas Luis R was founded in 1983, when Luis María Rodríguez and Txaro Urarte made their dream come true.

In 1990, the second generation of the family joined the project, promoting the creation of the Luis R brand and the development of wine tourism. In 1998, the winery expanded its operations with new vineyards and the introduction of aging and maturation processes.
In 2006, a major expansion took place with the implementation of the Bordeaux system and the development of a social area dedicated to wine tourism. In 2014, unique vineyard plots were segmented to create new wines under the brand, adopting advanced tools to enhance the expression of single-plot wines. In 2022, the winery began working on recovering vineyards of minority white grape varieties and developed new products to complete its commercial line.

Currently, their sons Luis and Alfredo have taken over, continuing the family tradition and producing wines that reflect the essence of Rioja Alavesa, internationally recognized for their quality.
